SAPTARI: The Hilti Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Hilti Group, and Habitat for Humanity Nepal, along with the local government of Saptari district and Mahuli Community Development Center (MCDC), celebrated today the completion of 14 bamboo homes built in partnership with Musahar people in Saptari district.
Each with a plinth area of 38 square meters, the houses are built in Shambunath municipality on a 169 square meter plot of land, which was previously government land. Families from the Musahar communities contributed their own labor to build these homes together with Habitat for Humanity Nepal’s implementing partner MCDC. The houses are constructed using the Hilti Foundation’s Cement Frame Bamboo Technology. This innovation helps homes resist natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and insect infestations.
In early March, Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli visited Birtamode, the other project site under the Hilti-Habitat partnership, where 37 bamboo houses were dedicated.
“We are honored to work hand-in-hand with local municipalities, provincial and federal governments to fulfill the constitutional right to housing for all Nepalis. For two decades, Habitat has been partnering with communities, NGOs and governments in the Eastern and Western Terai to create better lives through housing. Today we move a step closer to our vision of building a Nepal where all families have a decent place to call home,” said Christy Stickney, national director for Habitat for Humanity Nepal.
The Hilti Foundation and Habitat for Humanity International have been partners since 2012. To date, their partnership has served over 4.5 million people and built or improved over 900,000 homes around the world. In 2019, Hilti and Habitat started working together in Nepal to promote the use of the Cement Frame Bamboo Technology as a disaster-resilient housing solution in the Eastern Terai. The two organizations are focused on working together to scale innovative shelter technologies globally and increasing access to affordable decent housing now and into the future.
